Ap\u00f3s a condena\u00e7\u00e3o, esteve detido durante 11 anos, oito dos quais em regime de isolamento. Evade-se da fortaleza de Peniche a 3 de Janeiro de 1960, juntamente com outros oito prisioneiros pol\u00edticos. Na sua interven\u00e7\u00e3o em tribunal, Cunhal ataca as pol\u00edticas seguidas pelo Governo de Salazar, quer no que toca ao contexto nacional, quer no que diz respeito \u00e0 pol\u00edtica internacional, numa \u00e9poca na qual se assistia \u00e0 ascens\u00e3o da influ\u00eancia dos EUA na Europa e no Mundo: em 1949 Portugal torna-se membro fundador da NATO, adere ao Plano Marshall, e disponibiliza a Base das Lajes \u00e0s for\u00e7as armadas norte-americanas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nesta altura agrava-se a repress\u00e3o contra o movimento comunista portugu\u00eas: a pol\u00edcia pol\u00edtica assassina Milit\u00e3o Ribeiro a 2 de Janeiro de 1950; Jos\u00e9 Moreira a 23 de Janeiro; Alfredo Lima a 4 de Junho; e Carlos Pato a 26 de Junho. Este espect\u00e1culo \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m uma homenagem \u00e0s mulheres e aos homens que dedicaram as suas vidas \u00e0 defesa da Liberdade, para que fiquem preservados na nossa mem\u00f3ria.
