Foi em \u201cA Noite\u201d a primeira obra dram\u00e1tica de Saramago. O escritor dedica a Luzia Maria Martins, a pessoa que o \u201cachou capaz de escrever uma pe\u00e7a\u201d. Seria mesmo. A noite de que se fala nesta pe\u00e7a ficou para hist\u00f3ria: de 24 para 25 de Abril. A a\u00e7\u00e3o passa-se na reda\u00e7\u00e3o de um jornal em Lisboa e o autor avisa: \u201cQualquer semelhan\u00e7a com personagens da vida real e seus ditos e feitos \u00e9 pura coincid\u00eancia. Evidentemente\u201d. Nem outra coisa seria de esperar. A ironia passa tamb\u00e9m pela hist\u00f3ria desta noite em que administradores e redatores entram em conflito. Uns a gritar que a m\u00e1quina \u201ch\u00e1 de parar\u201d e outros a defender que ela \u201ch\u00e1 de andar\u201d. Quando o escreveu, Saramago j\u00e1 sabia que, para o bem e para o mal, a m\u00e1quina tinha continuado a andar.
